P. S. There are so many memories of ‘happenings’ in 2016 for us but the one that sticks out the most for me is the closing of the H C & S sugar mill in Pu’unene. I was born and raised on Maui and I’ve gazed upon the waving cane fields every day I’ve been on this beautiful Island. I will miss seeing them. Truly miss it. My dad, grandfathers (including my paternal grandmother) and uncles were employed by H C & S and the Wailuku Sugar Company – they were all fortunate to have gotten their retirement, unlike the many who weren’t so fortunate with the recent closing. I know some people are glad for the closing of the mill but for a lot of locals who were ‘raised on sugar cane’ it is like the passing of someone very dear. Here are some shots of the iconic smoke stacks that served as our ‘weather man’ as it showed us if the winds were blowing Kona. When our daughter was a little girl she called them the Cloud Maker.
