Summer Tour 2014

kickstarterBEYOND THE SEA WEST COAST TOUR 2014

We have been performing and recording in Hawaii for over 15 years.  In that time we have met many wonderful people from all over the world.  Often we have heard, “When are you coming to perform in our town?”  Well, one morning we woke up and decided (over Sunday breakfast) that we were going to go on tour!  We approached several friends and have since booked House Concerts and Club gigs in Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona.  We are working more club dates and various other venues to connect the dots between locations.

We start the Tour the third week of August in Washington, move on to Oregon; then Southern California and Arizona.  The final date is during the third week of September when we return to California  for a performance in Carmel By The Sea.  The idea is to touch as many people as we can by sharing our music and our goal is to grow the tour each summer and taking it across the states…and beyond!

TOUR RECAP

WASHINGTON

August 22 & August 24

Completed Gig #1 and Gig #2 in Washington. Our children Max and Kendall performed with us at both shows – they were amazing and we were so proud! The first one was the House Concert in Burien which was co-hosted by April & Joe ChanesAlessandra & Tony and Kari & Brian.  Alessandra’s and Tony’s home was the perfect setting – the views were amazing (it was hard at times to concentrate on performing as I kept getting distracted by the fantastic views), they provided some very ono pupus and the people who came to the concert were very nice and made our performance enjoyable for us as well.  The second show was in Kent at the Reds Wine Bar and that went really good as well.  The coolest part of that show was having my Washington ohana come to the performance – Max and Kendall got to meet cousins Kaliko and Malia for the first time.  We also had friends whom we’ve met on Maui that live in Washington come to this performance as well.  Extra special night indeed.

Well, another fun time of music and merriment tonight at Gig #3.  This time at Christo’s Lounge in Salem.  What a great room to play in.  Lisa Learn and her husband Michael treated us so fine, the staff was super and the audience was rapt and gave out good energy for us.  The room was packed with people we’d never met before but we also had our friends Frank & Mary Buck drive down from Longview WA with four of their friends and also Neal Chin with his girlfriend Ally and their two friends who drove up from Eugene OR.  Our Salem hosts Roger & Janet Budke were also there with a table full of their friends as well so we were certainly surrounded by a lot of aloha.

Great night at our Gig #4  – first House Concert in Salem.  Many thanks to our hosts Ken deLoozeElizabeth HarchenkoMaureen McGinnis and Gary Westford. Wow!  Gary’s and Maureen’s home in the Ilahe Hills Country Club was amazing – it was hard to concentrate with the vista-filled views! The guests were very much into the music which drove our performance…the energy was amazing. Still reeling from the great vibes.  : )

Started our Sunday singing at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Salem.  Our hosts, Roger and Janet Budke, asked us to sing a song at their church service and the experience was a highlight memory for sure.   And we were extremely touched upon entering the church and seeing that the whole congregation were wearing aloha shirts in our honor!

And so another one done – Gig #5, the second  House Concert in Salem – also unforgettable. BIG mahalo to our wonderful hosts Roger & Janet Budke. Perfect Sunday afternoon in Salem sharing our music with our many new friends.

Half way through the tour as we completed Gig #6 – an unforgettable evening for sure sharing our music with family and dear friends in Phil’s hometown, Hermosa Beach CA.  Mike Lacey, Rebecca Meyer and the staff at “Live At The Lounge” in the Comedy & Magic Club were top cabin and treated us so nice – MAHALO!  David Benoit gave the introduction for us before the start of the show – what an honor.  The whole vibe was nice and easy and the room was full of love and comfort.  How could it not be with all those friends and family which included friends who travelled from out of state to see us.  The biggest surprise was when our dear friend Pam surprised me in the Green Room – she and her husband Don flew in to catch the show before their trip to AZ.  Paul Alkire and his wife Christine, who are also from Maui, made the trip to see us as well.  So cool.

We had a great L. A. bandmates sharing the stage with us – John Dietz on flute and ukulele and Jeff Takiguchi on the upright bass.  Tasty and groovin’!

Music and love was alive and kicking in Hermosa Beach.  : )

Had a GREAT time at Gig #7, House Concert in Laguna Niguel last night. It was a reunion of sorts for Phil and the fellow Mira Costa High School class of ’75 classmates who were there. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our lovely host Patti Wadell Bergeron and her husband John for opening up their hearts and home to us! Many thanks, too, go to Deborah Fonoimoana for the excellent lighting; Falyn Fonoimoana for the sparkling spirit, helpfulness, Goddessness and the berry crisp!; Lisa Pontrelli Grannis for the lasagna!; Donnie Funk, Ian Green and Mike Sager for being such great musicians to groove with and to all who came and shared the evening with us. Love you all! P.S. Thank you Judy Bland Saavedra for the band shots you see here.

Yet another great evening. Got to groove with Kevin on the keyboard and a couple of other SD musicians, Tom Wilcox on drums and Mark Kapov on bass – yeah!

Gig #9 aboard the Desert Belle on Saguaro Lake – done. Cute duckies greeted us as we boarded. The amazing, breathtaking beauty of the Tonto National Forest amazed all of us as we cruised the lake with Capt. Gino and his crew.

We didn’t spot any antelope, bald eagles or mountain lions; however Rebecca and I saw not one but TWO wild horses on the way to the marina. AND we all spotted Phil’s classmate Teri Chadwick(resident of AZ) as she SUP’d to the boat just as we docked at the end of the cruise – complete with her sweet Aloha sign : )

Mellowed out the evening at the home of our AZ hosts Jon & Rebecca with a smorgasbord of yummy leftovers (Chinese take out, homemade eggplant lasagna) plus steamed lobster claws. What!? Then we all jumped in the pool and talked and laughed the night away.

Gig #10 at The Nash in Phoenix…what a night! We had a blast performing there with with two great Arizona cats, Steve Douglas on acoustic bass and Cleve Huff on drums. The Nash is a fab venue with great sound, cool vibes and friendly, accommodating staff.

We had fun seeing friends and family who popped in to see us…Ted and Robbie Beaty (all the way from St. Louis, MO); cousin Christine Barendrick and her daughter Lindsay; dear friend and Maui transplant Jodi Green; Phil’s Mira Costa H.S. c/o ’75 classmates Teri Chadwick and Theresa Tonne Caldwell; and our AZ hosts Rebecca The and Jon Robinson.

Once again the room was filled with lots of love and positive energy and we played and sang our hearts out.  Unforgettable evening indeed.  Mahalo Joel Goldenthal and the staff at The Nash and all who came to support us!

P.S. Chilled out at the hacienda post-gig. Great hang, great grinds and a sweet early birthday surprise for Phil from Rebecca and Jon. ; )

Phoebe and Brady “working hard” prepping for the House Concert…the delectable post Concert desserts Rebecca baked…great vibes from the attentive audience…Phil doing his thing…

And then all too soon today came and it was time to say a hui hou to Brady, Phoebe, Rebecca, Jon and Mesa….

It was a gorgeous morning…Brady held court from his domain…while Phoebe did her usual bit of sunning…Morning coffee and conversation followed by going over road route plans from Mesa, AZ to Palm Desert, CA…on the road again…

Mesa, AZ House Concert and a hui hou!

Then it was time for Gig #12, the last one of the Tour, and it was a very special. What started out as a big shindig ended up as an intimate evening with the Eggleston ohana. We had a scrumptious dinner prepared by Amy and Aunt Dana with desserts (thanks Nazneen!). We celebrated the 65th wedding anniversary of Uncle Herb and Aunt Dana as well as Phil’s birthday.

Then Phil and I played our tunes. Herb and Phil jammed a few after. Such a great evening. And we got to see Zarosh and Brooke! And cuz Jamie and Nazneen and Neil and Forrest too. : ) P. S. Sweet Ramba, Raboon’s doggie was very well behaved.

Food, music and fun!

Our Tour was a great success, better than we ever dreamed it would be.  We have memories to last a lifetime and it will take a while to come down from the high of the Tour.  Thank you once again to all of you who helped us make our dream come true with the “Beyond The Sea West Coast Tour 2014”; to all who hosted us at Venues and House Concerts and opened up their homes to us; to all who fed us; to all who came to our shows and to all the musicians who played with us.  A mere “thank you” will never be enough but we hope you know that we are forever grateful.
